How to Tune a Guitar to Drop D

David Ehlers/

Drop D is standard tuning with the lowest string lowered one whole step: D A D G B E.

The quick method

  1. Tune the other five strings to standard: A D G B E.
  2. Play the open 4th string (D) as a reference.
  3. Lower the lowest string until it matches that D one octave below.
  4. Check the two D strings together for beating or shimmer.

Lumituner includes a Drop D preset, so the target note changes automatically while you tune. A settled strobe pattern means the string is centered; if it moves left or right, keep making small peg adjustments.

Open the tuner and choose Guitar → Drop D.
