Sharp or Flat? Now You Can Just Glance and Know

The strobe disc is awesome once it clicks for you. Problem is, it takes a minute to click. I’ve watched people stare at those four spinning rings going “wait, which way is sharp again?” Happens to almost everyone the first few times.

The strobe’s great, it’s just a language you have to learn

Don’t get me wrong, the strobe is still the real deal. Spin direction tells you sharp or flat, spin speed tells you how far off, and when it goes dead still, you’re locked in. Nothing reads pitch drift better than that, and that’s not changing.

But it does ask something of you. You’ve got to hold the pattern in your head, catch which way it’s turning, feel out the speed, all while you’re also trying to fret the note clean and pluck it right. That’s a lot going on for something that should feel simple.

The iOS app already had a little meter for exactly this. I finally brought it over to the web tuner too, honestly mostly because I kept wishing I had it myself while testing on my laptop with zero strobe muscle memory built up.

What it actually does

Nothing fancy. Tick marks spread out about fifty cents each way, brighter in the middle, fading toward the edges. FLAT on the left, SHARP on the right. One needle, sliding wherever you’re drifting, colored to match: cool blue when you’re flat, green when you’re centered, warm when you’re sharp. Get it dead on and the whole thing fades down to almost nothing, because at that point there’s nothing left to tell you.

It’s not here to replace the strobe. It’s just the quick answer for anyone who wants to glance down and know which way to turn the peg without doing the mental math on a spinning disc.
